I was thinking about my important ssh keys and how annoying it would be if they were lost.  I thought it might be a good idea / kinda fun to solve this with QR Codes.

Why not keep a paper copy of my ssh keys in a handy little QR Code.  This makes the key easily storeable, portable and retrievable.

Why a QR Code you ask?
Mostly because they are fun.  But also because its allot easier to scan the code back onto my system rather than typing or OCRing a long string of ssh key characters.

How do you generate a QR Code?
I used QR Code from the mac app store. Its $2 and works great. If you are uber cheap or just prefer a command line interface (as I do), Kentaro Fukuchi has written a handy little command line tool called qrencode. I just found it recently so I haven't tried yet but it looks pretty sweet.

Encoding QR Codes is all well and good but how do I read it back onto my mac?
Fortunately I have you covered there as well.  Dansl made a handy little adobe air application that uses the your iSight camera as a QR Code Scanner.  You can check it out here.
